- 1
Preheat your oven to 320–340°F (160–170°C).
- 2
Rub the inside of a baking dish with the halved garlic clove, then butter it.
- 3
Peel and slice the potatoes into thin rounds (2–3 mm). Use a mandoline for uniform slices. Do not rinse them.
- 4
In a bowl, mix the cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- 5
Arrange the potato slices in tight layers in the dish. Pour the cream-milk mixture until halfway up. Dot with butter and add grated Gruyère if desired.
- 6
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

- For even slices and uniform cooking, use a mandoline. Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes after baking for better texture.
- Cheesy variation: Add layers of grated Gruyère or Comté for extra indulgence.
- Lighter version: Replace heavy cream with light cream and reduce the butter.
- Cooking: A slow and long bake allows the cream to fully soak into the potatoes.
